Away from Her

Away from Her
revolves around Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona (Julie Christie), and how the life of their intimate enviable 50 year marriage is changed due to Fiona's daily progression of Alzheimer's disease.
Proving that no love or marriage is perfect, with Fiona dropping gentle references of past betrayal, and the gradual deterioration of her sickness, they had to face the inevitable fact of separation.
Moving herself to a retirement home, Fiona thought it would be for the better. And being the policies of the home, loved ones were not allowed to visit for the next 30 days in order for their patients to 'adapt'. Grant's worries of Fiona losing memory of him surfaces when he returns and finds that she has forgotten him and had formed a close bond with another patient, Aubrey (Michael Murphy).
The story then continues with Grant's unwavering patience and determination to remind Fiona of all the memories they have shared, to a point where acceptance was the only option and if sacrificing a part of him was the only way of attaining her happiness, then so it shall be.

A truly profound story of love, partnership, and the pursuit of happiness.

"Sometimes you have to let go of what you can't live without."

"Grant and Fiona never yearn for the days of their youth, but rather for the later years when their intimacy had reached a higher peak. While so many films portray older characters in a one-dimensional way, Polley’s film portrays its characters as multifaceted people filled with wisdom and true beauty, thanks to their age and not in spite of it."
